#InnovateToINSPIRE Challenge FAQs

1). Why #InnovateToINSPIRE challenge?

  • India has significant ambitions for energy security and sustainability. By 2030, India aims to reduce its emissions target to 33-35% - amongst the highest across developing countries - and increase the share of non-fossil fuel-based electricity to 40%.
  • Energy consumption in India is expected to increase by 165% by 2040, but adoption of energy efficient alternatives is limited to specific appliances and institutions with minimal support for risk-sharing by financial institutions.
  • The intervention potential for targeted innovations – technologies, processes and business models that can sustain clean energy supply and responsible consumption while balancing development ambitions - is not only significant, but a critical need as developing nations like India bear the brunt of the burden of climate change action.
  • To spark this movement, Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL) and World Resources Institute (WRI) are proud to conduct the #InnovateToINSPIRE Challenge 2019 to invite Thinkers, Innovators, Inventors, Pioneers, Trailblazers, Trendsetters, Entrepreneurs to come forward with ideas and solutions that will help leverage the full potential of energy efficiency and bring its multiple co-benefits to the fore.

2). What are the themes?

    • Improved Grid Management
    • Energy Efficient Technologies
    • Clean Energy
    • Electric Mobility
    • Financial Instruments

3). Who can enter?

  • The challenge is open to anyone, team or individual, aged 18 or over from around the world.
  • Students as part of the institutional team representing a school/college/institute can also apply.
  • Participants should have a POC (Proof of Concept)/Prototype of the innovative idea.
  • Ideas or solutions without any POC (Proof of Concept)/Prototype will not be considered.

4). Why should I enter?

You will get an opportunity to present your idea/solution to the world’s leading experts in the realm of energy management and sustainability. Further, you will get to network with industry experts and showcase your ideas and solutions.

5). What do I win?

  • Each winning entry (maximum 5) of the second edition of #InnovateToINSPIRE Challenge 2019 will be eligible to receive funding of INR 5 lakhs, each. Sector experts will also provide the winning teams and individuals mentoring and guidance to help bring the submitted solution to market.
  • Also, the finalists (10- 12 applicants shortlisted for the final round) get an opportunity to showcase their idea(s) at the exhibition during INSPIRE 2019, on 11th & 12th November 2019 in Mumbai.

6). What are the deadlines?

The challenge opens at 5 PM (IST) on April 15th, 2019 and the deadline for submission of application is 5 PM (IST) on 31st August 2019. Winners will be felicitated on 11th November 2019 in Mumbai.

7). What is the procedure followed for selection?

Sign Up for #InnovateToINSPIRE Challenge 2019 ) and submit your idea.

Upload all supporting documents in a single PDF document. Size of the PDF document should not exceed 20 MB.

Interim Selection:

First round of evaluation on the basis of relevance of the idea/solution and how effectively your idea addresses the challenge.

Jury Selection:

Applications shortlisted in the interim round will go to a panel of eminent jury members for Final Selection.

Final Pitch:

Applications shortlisted by the Jury in the second round (Maximum 12) will be notified by the organiser(s) by 4th week of September and these finalists will then be invited for presenting the final pitch to the Jury .

8). When will I know if I’ve been successful?

  • If you’re one of applicants shortlisted for the Jury round, you will receive an official communication via both an email and a call from the organizers. At this point, you may also need to send further details related to the idea/solution that you have proposed.
  • Unfortunately, if you don’t get back to us, we won’t be able to include you in the shortlist.

9). Who are the judges?

The judges are innovators, entrepreneurs, inventors having an expertise in the field of clean energy. The decision of the panel of eminent jury members will be final and under no circumstances, the organiser(s) will entertain any query/request for revision of the final results.

10). Can I apply for more than one challenge?

Yes, registered participants can apply for more than one or all the challenges.

11). What are the eligibility criteria for participating in the innovation challenge?

12). Is the challenge open to individuals as well?

Yes, the challenge is open to individuals as well.

13). How do I enter?

Register on www.innovatetoinspire.in by accepting Challenge Rules. Login credentials will be sent to your registered email address. You can then login using this ID and Password combination on the portal innovatetoinspire.in and submit your idea(s).

14). I have registered on #InnovateToINSPIRE challenge website but have not received Log-in credentials. How to get the credentials?

  • If you have not received the login credentials, please check your spam folder or try registering again. Else, please email us with your coordinates at innovatetoinspire@eesl.co.in and we will get in touch with you soon to resolve any issue.

15). What materials we need to submit? What is the format of proposal submissions and what are the topics to be covered?

  • Please enter the details (in English and under word limit as indicated) in the online form and upload all supporting documents, including copyright/patent certificates/any other certification proof/test reports, at least 3 different photographs of the prototype/POC and any other supporting document in a single PDF file with file size not exceeding 20 MB before 5 pm on 31st August 2019.

16). Are there any other benefits associated with the challenge (modalities, data support, funding support) other than prize money?

  • As mentioned in Q5, besides prize money, the winners will also be eligible for EESL to evaluate further the feasibility, to provide mentorship and guidance to bring the solution to market.
  • Also, the final entries shortlisted by the Jury (Maximum 12) get an opportunity to showcase their idea at the exhibition during the International Symposium to Promote Innovation and Research in Energy Efficiency (INSPIRE) – 2019 from 11th – 12th November, 2019 in Mumbai.

17). By when do I need to arrive and set up my stall at the exhibition area?

If you are shortlisted for the final round, we will get in touch with you to discuss further details with respect to the exhibition.

18). If I have an innovative idea in the domain of energy efficiency that does not fall under either of the categories, am I eligible to participate in the innovation challenge.

Under #InnovateToINSPIRE challenge, organisers have invited innovative ideas under defined categories only. However, you can share any other idea(s) by writing us at innovatetoinspire@eesl.co.in with the subject as ‘New Innovative Idea on Energy Efficiency/Clean Energy’. We will evaluate the same and reply to you. But we reiterate that this will be not a part of the #InnovateToINSPIRE challenge.

19). How is EESL going to use the information shared by the participants in future post the challenge?

All the material, information, document or data submitted by the participant to the organizer is submitted on “Confidential” basis. Neither the organizer nor any of its affiliates’ have any obligations to treat the material or data or information submitted as “Non - Confidential” and organiser can only utilise this data or information for the purpose of this innovation challenge.

20). How many ideas/solutions will be selected for the final round?

A maximum of 12 ideas/solutions will be selected for the final round. These participants will pitch their ideas to the eminent Jury panel on 10th November, 2019 in Mumbai.

21). Can we submit an idea which is yet to be tested? What future support will EESL provide in such cases?

Only ideas/solutions with a Proof of Concept (PoC)/Prototype will be considered eligible for this challenge. The winning entries will be eligible for a cash prize of INR 5 lakh each. Depending on the maturity of the winning entries, EESL will evaluate the feasibility, to provide mentorship and guidance to bring the solution to market.

22). Will there be an extension of last date?

Late entries will not be entertained. We would request to submit your ideas well in advance of the deadline to avoid last minute rush.

23). What is the maximum team size that is allowed?

While a team can comprise of any number of members, if selected by the jury for the final round, organiser(s) will arrange for travel (to & fro) and accommodation for only 2 members per team. Organiser(s) will book 1 double occupancy room per team in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India.s

24). What is the maximum team size that is allowed?

No bar on the number of participating team members. However, EESL will be providing boarding and travel for 2 members only if shortlisted for the final round.
